When selecting baby gear for their growing families, most parents want products that are budget-friendly, durable, portable, and easy to clean and use. The same is true for the best high chairs.

As a mom and former foster parent, I have owned multiple high chairs. Drawing on my own experience and many hours of research, I have compiled a list of the best easy-to-clean high chairs on the market, today.

The Fisher-Price SpaceSaver and Cosco Simple Fold High Chair are ones that I have used and personally recommend.

The claim to fame of the Graco Blossom 6-in-1 Convertible High Chair is its multi-function ability.

Here are the 6 modes:

  1. Infant high chair
  2. Traditional high chair
  3. Infant booster
  4. Toddler booster
  5. Youth chair
  6. 2 Children at once

The seat pad is thick and comfortable. It is also removable and washable! There is an adjustable footrest, 3 position recline and 6 different height adjustments.

One thing I particularly love about this high chair is the innovative design that allows you to seat two children, simultaneously. Options include: using the high chair and toddler booster; using the infant booster and youth stool; or using the toddler booster and youth stool. The booster seat easily straps to a kitchen chair and allows you to seat your growing big kid while your little one hangs out in the high chair.

The Abiie Beyond Wooden High Chair is so versatile and flexible. It will be the only dining chair your child needs from the time they're 6 months old through their adult years. In a matter of seconds, this baby high chair transforms from a high chair to a toddler's chair to a dining chair, perfectly sized for people of all ages.

Abiie Beyond Wooden High Chair with Tray. The Perfect Seating Highchair Solution for Your Child As Toddler's or a Dining Chair (6 Months up to 250 Lb). (Mahogany Wood - Cream Cushion)

This is the luxury chair of our list and the materials and construction quality are obvious. It is a much more elegant piece of furniture than the typical high chair. Whether all of this justifies the price is up to you.

As you would expect the surface is waterproof and stain-resistant. Cleanup is easy.

The seat is nicely padded, unlike many competitor high chairs. The padding is made from high-quality foam so it will last a long time. You can remove the cushions to clean them and clean the chair itself. The cushions fit into the seat and mesh together.

If you want to change things up there are different colors available that you can swap out.

The highchair is really high quality and the wood finish is thick and not likely to wear or scratch with use or cleaning.

There is a wooden tray that can be used as-is. But there is also a plastic tray insert that is probably easier to clean because it is removable. The plastic tray is safe in the dishwasher.

I love the ingenuity of this award-winning high chair. My friend owns an Abiie Beyond Wooden High Chair. It's her favorite, and she won't recommend anything else!

The Graco EveryStep 7 in 1 High Chair is an easy-to-clean high chair that can be used up to 7 different ways as your child grows. It transitions from infant high chair all the way up to a step stool/infant booster combo if you have more than one child.

You can throw all the fabric materials, including the leatherette seat pad, into the washer for a quick and easy clean while the tray gets sanitized and cleaned up in the dishwasher. There are some mixed reviews on how easy this is to clean. To me, it seems pretty simple, but I want you to keep that in mind before purchasing.

The best part of this high chair is how long you will be able to use it. Many high chairs are folded up and stored away once your child can easily sit at the kitchen table to eat. With the Graco EveryStep high chair, your grown child can still sit at the table with everyone else while using part of the high chair as a step stool. For the price, long-lasting stages is a huge plus!

The Ingenuity SmartServe 4-in-1 High Chair is an easy-to-clean high chair that includes a swing food tray to make sitting baby down and picking them back up quite easy.

There are some pretty cool features to this high chair including the hidden tray storage area where utensils or other small things can be stored with the high chair.

Another cool feature is the 4-in-1 option to use the SmartServe chair as a high chair, booster seat, toddler chair, or as two separate chairs to seat two children (ex: one in high chair and another in a seat attached to a table chair.

HM-tech Baby High Chair

Baby High Chair with Double Removable Tray for Baby/Infants/Toddlers, 3-in-1 Wooden High Chair/Booster/Chair | Grows with Your Child | Adjustable Legs | Modern Wood Design | Easy to Assemble

Popularity

The HM-tech Baby High Chair has a modern and stylish look, as it is made with natural beech wooden legs. A great perk of this high chair is the removable double tray feature. When one tray is dirty and needs cleaning, you can use the second tray rather than waiting for the first tray to be cleaned.

This is a 3-in-1 high chair, so it grows with your child, transitioning from a standard high chair to a youth chair. The seat pad can be wiped down to clean and the tray can be removed for cleaning.

A potential downfall of this high chair is that the tray may not be easily removable with one hand. In fact, some buyers say they have a bit of trouble removing the tray from the high chair.

The Primo Cozy Tot Deluxe Convertible Folding High Chair does not have fabric, which means you don't have an extra layer of chair to wash. Fabric requires extra maintenance while the Primo chair simply has plastic you can spray and wipe clean.

When it comes to spills, the attached tray is able to hold plenty of liquid with high edges to contain mess. It's not as large as other trays meaning it takes up less space that will hopefully translate to less spilled food. Toss it in the dishwasher too!

Another great feature is the high chair converts to a toddler chair so it's useable once your child is done with the high chair. Either way you use it, you can use the three-point safety harness.

Use this chair from six months up to 36 months. It's lightweight at just 11 pounds. Also, it folds up for easy storage too!

Joovy Nook High Chair

JOOVY Nook High Chair, Black

I am quite impressed with the Joovy Nook High Chair. This baby high chair is the only one on our list with a tray that swings open instead of pulling out.

It is really convenient because you can operate this highchair with one hand and you don't need to find a separate place to put the tray while you are getting baby in and out. Simply swing the tray open, unbuckle your child, and off you go to the next task.

Four depth adjustments allow you to get the tray positioned perfectly to keep food on the tray and not on your child's lap.

Clean-up is a breeze with the Joovy Nook High Chair. The deluxe padded seat is comfortable and easy to clean, while the seat cover is machine washable. As an added bonus, the tray insert is dishwasher safe. This high chair is so compact, it's easy to take along for use at picnics, camping, friends' houses, or grandparents' houses. Bringing your baby to meals anywhere has never been easier.

Cosco Simple Fold High Chair

Cosco Simple Fold High Chair with 3-Position Tray (Elephant Squares)

Another excellent, budget-friendly high chair that I recommend is the Cosco Simple Fold High Chair.

The Cosco made this list because of its portability. It folds flat and can lean against a wall, sit in a closet or fit in a car without taking up much space.

The tray moves in and out with 3 different positions dependent on the size of your child.

You can't see it in this picture, but the chair leans back a little bit and it can't be adjusted to be straight up.

Some are critical of the seat pad, saying that it isn't removable to be machine washable. And they are correct, it doesn't remove. However, it wipes clean with a wet wipe or sanitizing wipe.

I used this high chair with four super messy eaters during my time as a foster parent. Let me say that I NEVER had a problem with staining or difficulty cleaning the high chair. It is very reasonably priced so this is another winner that parents should definitely consider.

Best Easy to Clean Sit-on-Chair High Chair

Fisher-Price SpaceSaver High Chair

Fisher-Price SpaceSaver High Chair, Multicolor

Of all the high chairs that I've used, the Fisher-Price SpaceSaver High Chair is my absolute favorite!

It is small enough to fit in almost any chair. It is easy to attach and detach, and also easy to store.

Like a car seat, this baby high chair has 3 different reclining positions. This is handy for infants who aren't able to sit up fully because their heads slump forward. The tray remains fixed in a level position

It comes with two different height settings.

The tray removes with just one hand – especially helpful when you're taking baby in and out! Since it's dishwasher safe, it's easy to clean and sanitize. The machine-washable seat pad is spill and stain resistant, so it's easy to wipe clean between washings.

I can't say enough good things about this high chair, and I recommend it to all new moms. The portability and easy cleaning make the Fisher-Price SpaceSaver High Chair a clear winner! Plus, it is easy on the budget, too.

The Inglesina Dining Table Chair with Tray is a portable high chair that you can easily pop on and off tables for a child seat wherever you go. It is designed for ages 6 months – 37 lbs and is is adaptable to most tables.

On the back of the high chair is a pocket with flap to help keep your child's little things together. If you're on the go, you can easily fold the seat flat for easy carrying.

Inglesina Dining Table Chair Plus Tray, Black

This is a cool way for your child to sit right up at the table with the family. The seat is comfortable and has a high back rest.

Customers love this alternative high chair seat because they can easily pop off the fabric seat cushion to clean it and pop it back on with ease. In addition, the tray can be taken off easily to be cleaned in the sink or dishwasher.

Some say it's easier to clean this high chair than it is to clean standard high chairs!

Guide to Selecting an Easy-to-Clean High Chair

When selecting the best high chair for your little one, there are three main ideas to keep in mind: portability, cleaning method, and your individual family needs.

Portability

Some high chairs can be folded easily and moved from place to place, while others are stationary. Evaluate which style will work best for your lifestyle before purchasing a high chair.

Cleaning Method

Do you have an extremely messy eater? If so, a high chair with a machine-washable seat insert and dishwasher safe tray may be a better option for you.

Family Needs

Will you have more than one child? Would you prefer to only make one purchase? If so, a convertible high chair, or one that features an additional booster seat may be a good option for you.

Space

One of the biggest determinants for which high chair you can purchase is the space you have. If you have a large, open dining and eating space, then you can shop away! If you have less space, you might want to consider a hook on high chair or a space saving high chair.

FAQs about High Chairs

How should I safely use a high chair?

According to healthychildren.org, powered by the American Academy of Pediatrics, when using a high chair, you should remember to:

  • Make sure the legs are spread out to the fullest extent so it doesn't tip.
  • Check that the legs are locked for those that fold.
  • Always use the safety harness in the chair and don't forget the lower, vertical strap.
  • Using the belt around the waist, without using the crotch strap may allow the child to slide down and can result in serious injury.
  • Children should never stand in the chair.
  • You shouldn't place the high chair on a table. Scooting motion by the child might cause the chair and child to fall off.
  • Don't let other children play on the chair whether or not it is occupied.
  • Don't leave your child alone in a high chair.
  • Exercise caution with clip-on style chairs. These should have a sound, working locking mechanism to avoid accidents. These may be dangerous if the child can push against the table and cause the chair to dislodge the seat from the table.

What can I use to clean a high chair?

It depends in part on what is the material of your high chair (or the part of the high chair that you are cleaning). I recommend a mild solution of dish soap and water, followed by a going over with sanitizing wipes, if necessary. Carry sanitizing wipes and, when using a restaurant high chair, give it a good going over before installing your child.

Note: You don't want to apply too much water to wood. You can sparingly apply the dish soap and water solution, however, using a damp cloth. Follow with sanitizing wipes, if necessary, and then dry if you have any concerns about residual moisture.

The tray should be cleaned after every use. If it can go in the sink or dishwasher, all the better. The seat (and other parts your baby regularly touches) should be cleaned regularly. The cleaning of the cushion will be determined by its material.

Personally, I would not have a cushion in a high chair for a child who can easily sit up (unless the high chair design demands it). That said, most waterproof cushions can be cleaned with the same soap and water solutions and sanitizing wipes. A cloth cushion or its cover can, hopefully, go into the washer. If not, it will have to be hand washed (again, dish soap and hot water is acceptable).

How do you clean the straps on a high chair?

Most can be removed and washed in the washing machine. Air dry.

It is often adequate, however, to use a cloth damp with a mild dish soap and water solution. After I do this I generally clean the cloth itself thoroughly and then use it to wipe the straps again with hot water only.

At what age should a child be in a high chair?

Most children should be in a high chair at around 6 months when they can sit, and will need to use a high chair until somewhere between 18 months and 3 years.

Can you put a high chair tray in the dishwasher?

If at all possible, check the instructions for your particular high chair. If the tray is not wooden, it is likely that it can be washed in the top rack of your dishwasher.

Such a tray is usually easy to wipe down, however, so, if in doubt, just use a mild solution of dish soap and water, followed by sanitizing wipes.

Which sanitizer disinfectant can I use for a baby high chair?

Clorox Anywhere Hard Surface Spray or Clorox wipes (allow to dry, then wipe down with a clean, damp rag). Alternatively, or for more regular cleaning use, hydrogen peroxide, which may be more baby-friendly.

Many people recommend a solution of vinegar and water, which is fine for cleaning but does not sanitize (kill germs).

The baby brand, Babyganics, has a cleaner that is baby safe. Again, it does not sanitize.

How often do I need to sanitize my child's high chair?

While it is important to clean regularly, it is not always necessary to sanitize. There is some indication that children who grow up in the presence of germs develop stronger immune systems.

At the same time, most babies suck on anything within reach, assuring by their own behavior the development of their immune systems. I would use sanitizer for a very small baby, a sick baby, or if I suspected a surface may have come into contact with any germ that is particularly noxious.

Final Word

Any of the high chairs featured in this article are sure to keep your little one happy and content during mealtime. After all, when baby is comfortable, everyone can enjoy their meal!
