It is a quick and easy way to help you pay for online shopping or pay back a friend you owe money to - but just what should you do if you need to request a refund on PayPal?

How long does a PayPal refund take?
PayPal can be used both to send and receive money - but if something goes wrong, you can request a refund.
You can request a refund of any payment you have made for up to 180 days - around six months - after you have made it.
You can generally expect a refund to appear on your PayPal Credit account within 7-10 working days.
This means 7-10 days from the date the merchant processed the refund - but it can take longer.

It could take up to 30 days to complete a refund if your payment was made from your bank card or account, depending on your card issuer.
To view your refunds, log on to your PayPal account and click 'Details' - which is next to PayPal Credit on the left-hand side of the page.
Next, click 'See Statements', and this will show you the refunds.
If you want to see refunds that were paid earlier than your current statement, change the dates.

How do I request a refund?
You should start by contacting the seller or trader first - PayPal calls this raising a 'dispute'.
You can do this in the 'Resolution Centre' section of PayPal. This can be found by clicking 'More' in the top-right hand corner of the page, next to 'Send' and 'Request'.
You should then click the blue button which reads 'Report a Problem'. You will be asked to notify PayPal which transaction you dispute.
A dispute can be raised up to 180 days after making a payment.
What should I do if PayPal says I've been refunded but the money isn't in my account?
To check the status of your refund, go to 'Activity', then change the date range and click 'Filters', then 'Refunds'.
If your refund has been completed, it might just take bit longer for the refund to reach the funding source.
The money will be refunded to the credit card you used, if you paid via a credit card.
If the card you used is for an account which is no longer open, PayPal says you should contact the bank.
You will find the refund in your PayPal balance, if you used this to make your payment.
If you still don't get your money back, Citizens Advice says that you can complain to the Financial Ombudsmen.
In order to do this, you should have a 'letter of deadlock' - correspondence from the seller to say there is nothing further they can do.
But you can also go to the Ombudsmen if you did not get this letter within eight weeks.
